What seborrhoeic keratoses are

Seborrhoeic keratoses are raised, waxy or slightly rough growths that look as if they've been stuck on to the skin. They range from light brown to black and are very common from middle age onwards, often on the back, chest, face and scalp.

You may also hear them called seborrhoeic warts, age warts or barnacles. Despite the name, they aren't true warts: they aren't caused by a virus and they aren't contagious. They're harmless.

The NHS doesn't usually remove them, because they're harmless. People often want them removed because they:

  • catch on clothing, bra straps or a razor
  • itch or get irritated
  • sit somewhere visible, like the face or neck
  • multiply over time and make you self-conscious

How treatment works

We use advanced electrolysis: the tip of a very fine needle, about the size of an eyelash, releases a tiny energy current into the growth. This dries up the growth, which then disappears. Treatment takes place at City Aesthetics Clinic in Newcastle city centre.

  1. Free consultation. Your nurse looks at your seborrhoeic keratoses, confirms they're suitable for treatment and answers your questions. There's no obligation, and you can go away and think about it.
  2. Treatment. In the same 30-minute appointment, your nurse treats as many as time allows. The time needed depends on their size and number, and your nurse will tell you at your consultation whether they can be treated in one session.
  3. Healing. Expect some redness after treatment. Small scabs can form, and these drop off within a few days.
  4. Free top-up. If any need further treatment, you can come back free of charge within 8 weeks. And if you have any concerns, or would just like your nurse to take a look, you're welcome to come back free of charge.

What it feels like: most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Aftercare: keep the area clean and dry, and don't pick at any scabs. Your nurse will explain everything before you leave. There's no downtime, so you can carry on with your usual day straight after.

Frequently asked questions

How much does seborrhoeic keratosis removal cost?

£150 for a 30-minute session, including a free consultation and a free top-up within 8 weeks if needed. You pay per session, not per growth.

Will the NHS remove seborrhoeic keratoses?

Usually not. They're harmless, so removal is treated as cosmetic. Private treatment is the usual option if they bother you.

Are seborrhoeic warts contagious?

No. Unlike common warts, they aren't caused by a virus and can't spread to other people.

Could it be skin cancer?

Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless, but some can look similar to other skin conditions. If you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first. Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Will it leave a mark?

Expect some redness and possibly small scabs for a few days. As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of scarring that can't be ruled out. Your nurse will explain what you can expect at your consultation.

How many appointments will I need?

It depends on their size and number. Your nurse will tell you at your consultation whether they can be treated in one session. If any need a top-up, it's free within 8 weeks.

Will they come back?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise they won't come back. New ones also tend to appear over time. Your nurse will talk you through what to expect.

Do you treat people under 18?

No. We only treat people aged 18 and over, for all treatments.

When to see your GP first

Some skin cancers can look like seborrhoeic keratoses, so if you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first, especially if a growth:

  • is new and growing quickly
  • has changed in size, shape or colour
  • bleeds, itches or is sore without being caught
  • has uneven edges or several colours
  • looks different from your others, or is something you're not sure about

Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor.
