What skin tags are

Skin tags are small, soft flaps of skin that hang from the surface. They're harmless and very common, especially on the neck, armpits, eyelids, under the bra line and in the groin.

They don't need treating for health reasons, which is why the NHS rarely removes them. But many people want them gone because they:

  • catch on necklaces, collars, bra straps or a razor
  • rub, get sore or bleed when snagged
  • sit somewhere visible, like the eyelids or neck
  • keep multiplying and make you self-conscious

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Skin tags are one of the most common things people ask us to treat.

How treatment works

We use advanced electrolysis: a very fine probe delivers a tiny, precise current that seals the base and removes the skin tag. Treatment takes place at City Aesthetics Clinic in Newcastle city centre.

  1. Free consultation. Your nurse looks at your skin tags, confirms they're suitable for treatment and answers your questions. There's no obligation, and you can go away and think about it.
  2. Treatment. In the same 30-minute appointment, your nurse treats as many skin tags as time allows. In about 95% of cases, everything is removed in one visit.
  3. Healing. Skin tags come away straight away during treatment, so you leave without them. The skin underneath then needs a little time to heal, and you may have a small pink mark or tiny scab for a few days.
  4. Free review. If anything needs a touch-up, you can come back for a free review appointment within 8 weeks. And if you have any concerns, or would just like your nurse to take a look, you're welcome to come back free of charge.

What it feels like: most people describe a quick hot pinprick and find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Aftercare: keep the area clean and dry, and avoid picking. Your nurse will explain everything before you leave. There's no downtime, so you can carry on with your usual day straight after.

Frequently asked questions

Does skin tag removal hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. It feels like a quick hot pinprick and each tag takes a minute or two. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Will it bleed or leave a scar?

Advanced electrolysis seals the tag as it works, so bleeding is rare. You may have a small pink mark or tiny scab for a few days while it heals. As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of scarring that can't be ruled out. Your nurse will explain what you can expect at your consultation.

Can you remove skin tags on my eyelids?

Yes. Eyelid skin tags are treated carefully by our nurses and are one of the most common areas we see.

Can you treat skin tags in intimate areas?

Yes, discreetly and in private. Just mention it when you book, or at your consultation.

Why won't the NHS remove my skin tags?

Skin tags are harmless, so the NHS usually treats removal as cosmetic. If a GP has told you this, private treatment is the usual next step. Read more about skin tag removal on the NHS.

Could it be cancer?

Skin tags are harmless. But if you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first, especially if a mark is changing, bleeding, or you're not sure what it is. Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor. Read more about whether skin tags are cancerous.

Is it safe to remove skin tags at home?

Home kits and threads can cause bleeding, infection or scarring, especially near the eyes. It can be much safer and more effective to be treated by a professional. Read more about home removal compared with clinic treatment.

Will they come back?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise they won't come back. Treated skin tags can return, and new ones may grow over time. Your nurse will talk you through what to expect.

How many appointments will I need?

Usually one. About 95% of people have everything treated in a single 30-minute visit, with a free review within 8 weeks if anything needs a touch-up.

Do I need to buy a package?

No. You pay per visit, with no upfront packages. Everything is fully explained at your consultation, so you understand the cost and there are no surprises.

When to see your GP first

See your GP before booking if a mark is:

  • changing in size, shape or colour
  • bleeding, itching or sore without being caught on anything
  • dark, uneven, or different from your other skin tags
  • something you're not sure about

We don't treat moles without a letter from your GP.
