What facial thread veins are

Thread veins, also called broken capillaries or telangiectasia, are fine red or purple lines just under the skin. On the face they're most common on the nose, cheeks and chin.

A spider naevus is a small red dot with tiny vessels spreading out from it, like the legs of a spider. They're common on the face and upper body.

Both are harmless and very common. They can be linked to things like sun exposure, changes in temperature, getting older or simply your genes. People often want them removed because they:

  • make the skin look red or flushed
  • are hard to cover with make-up
  • make them feel self-conscious

The NHS doesn't usually treat them, because they're harmless.

How treatment works

We use advanced electrolysis: the tip of a very fine needle, about the size of an eyelash, is placed along the vein and releases a tiny energy current. This seals the vein so it disappears straight away, though the skin then needs a few days to heal and some small scabs may form. Treatment takes place at City Aesthetics Clinic in Newcastle city centre.

  1. Free consultation. Your nurse looks at your thread veins, confirms they're suitable for treatment and answers your questions. There's no obligation, and you can go away and think about it.
  2. Treatment. In the same 30-minute appointment, your nurse treats as many veins as time allows. Most cases are treated in one session, though larger areas may need more. Your nurse will tell you at your consultation.
  3. Healing. Expect some redness after treatment. Small scabs can form, and these drop off within a few days.
  4. Free top-up. If any veins need further treatment, you can come back free of charge within 8 weeks. And if you have any concerns, or would just like your nurse to take a look, you're welcome to come back free of charge.

What it feels like: most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas of the face are more sensitive than others.

Aftercare: keep the area clean, avoid make-up on treated skin for 24 hours (or as your nurse advises), and don't pick at any scabs. Using a high-factor sun cream afterwards helps protect the skin. There's no downtime, so you can carry on with your usual day straight after.

Frequently asked questions

How much does facial thread vein removal cost?

£150 for a 30-minute session, including a free consultation and a free top-up within 8 weeks if needed. You pay per session, not per vein.

Do you treat leg veins?

No. We treat thread veins and spider naevi on the face only.

What's the difference between thread veins and spider naevi?

Thread veins are fine red lines. A spider naevus has a central red dot with tiny vessels spreading out from it. Both are treated the same way.

Will the NHS treat facial thread veins?

Usually not. They're harmless, so treatment is seen as cosmetic. Private treatment is the usual option if they bother you.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas of the face are more sensitive than others.

Will it leave a mark?

Expect some redness and possibly small scabs for a few days. As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of scarring that can't be ruled out. Your nurse will explain what you can expect at your consultation.

How many appointments will I need?

Most cases are treated in one session, though larger areas may need more. Your nurse will tell you at your consultation. If any veins need a top-up, it's free within 8 weeks.

Will they come back?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise they won't come back. New thread veins can also appear over time, especially with sun exposure. Your nurse will talk you through what to expect.

Do you treat people under 18?

No. We only treat people aged 18 and over, for all treatments.

When to see your GP first

If you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first, especially if:

  • several spider naevi have appeared suddenly
  • the redness comes with flushing, spots or burning that comes and goes, which can be a sign of rosacea
  • a red mark is raised, growing, bleeding or changing
  • it's something you're not sure about

Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor.
