What blood spots are

Cherry angiomas, also called Campbell de Morgan spots, are small, bright red or purple spots made of a tiny cluster of blood vessels. They're usually smooth and round, from a pinhead to a few millimetres across, and most often appear on the chest, stomach, back and arms.

They're harmless and very common, and tend to appear in greater numbers from your 30s onwards. People often want them removed because they:

  • stand out on pale skin, especially on the chest and shoulders
  • bleed if they're scratched or caught
  • keep multiplying over time

The NHS doesn't usually remove them, because they're harmless.

How treatment works

We use advanced electrolysis: the tip of a very fine needle, about the size of an eyelash, releases a tiny energy current into the spot. This seals the blood vessels and the spot disappears straight away, though the skin then needs a few days to heal. Treatment takes place at City Aesthetics Clinic in Newcastle city centre.

  1. Free consultation. Your nurse looks at your spots, confirms they're suitable for treatment and answers your questions. There's no obligation, and you can go away and think about it.
  2. Treatment. In the same 30-minute appointment, your nurse treats as many spots as time allows. The time needed depends on their size and number, and your nurse will tell you at your consultation whether they can be treated in one session.
  3. Healing. Expect some redness after treatment. Small scabs can form, and these drop off within a few days.
  4. Free top-up. Larger spots can need more than one treatment. If any need a top-up, you can come back free of charge within 8 weeks. And if you have any concerns, or would just like your nurse to take a look, you're welcome to come back free of charge.

What it feels like: most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Aftercare: keep the area clean and dry, and don't pick at any scabs. Your nurse will explain everything before you leave. There's no downtime, so you can carry on with your usual day straight after.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cherry angioma removal cost?

£150 for a 30-minute session, including a free consultation and a free top-up within 8 weeks if needed. You pay per session, not per spot.

Are cherry angiomas and Campbell de Morgan spots the same?

Yes. They're two names for the same harmless red spots.

Will the NHS remove them?

Usually not. They're harmless, so removal is treated as cosmetic. Private treatment is the usual option if they bother you.

Why am I getting more red spots?

They become more common with age and often run in families. Most people notice more of them over the years. If spots appear suddenly in large numbers, see your GP.

Does it hurt?

Most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and some areas are more sensitive than others.

Will it leave a mark?

Expect some redness and possibly small scabs for a few days. As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of scarring that can't be ruled out. Your nurse will explain what you can expect at your consultation.

How many appointments will I need?

It depends on the size and number of spots. Your nurse will tell you at your consultation whether they can be treated in one session. If any need a top-up, it's free within 8 weeks.

Will they come back?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise they won't come back. New spots also tend to appear over time. Your nurse will talk you through what to expect.

Do you treat people under 18?

No. We only treat people aged 18 and over, for all treatments.

When to see your GP first

If you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first, especially if a spot:

  • is changing in size, shape or colour
  • bleeds without being knocked or scratched
  • is dark, flat or irregular rather than smooth and red
  • appeared suddenly along with many others
  • is something you're not sure about

Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor.
