What milia are

Milia are tiny, hard, white or yellowish bumps just under the surface of the skin. They form when keratin, a protein in the skin, gets trapped. They're harmless and very common, especially under the eyes, on the eyelids, cheeks and nose.

They aren't spots, so they can't be squeezed out like a whitehead, and trying usually just makes the skin sore. Some clear up by themselves, but many last for months or years. People often want them removed because they:

  • sit right on the face, often around the eyes
  • show through make-up
  • won't budge with scrubs or skincare

The NHS doesn't usually treat milia, because they're harmless.

How treatment works

We use advanced electrolysis: a very fine probe makes a tiny opening over each milium so it can be gently removed. Treatment takes place at City Aesthetics Clinic in Newcastle city centre.

  1. Free consultation. Your nurse looks at your milia, confirms they're suitable for treatment and answers your questions. There's no obligation, and you can go away and think about it.
  2. Treatment. In the same 30-minute appointment, your nurse treats as many milia as time allows.
  3. Healing. Milia are removed during treatment. The skin then needs a little time to heal, and you may have slight redness or tiny marks for a few days.
  4. Free top-up. If any milia need a touch-up, you can come back free of charge within 8 weeks. And if you have any concerns, or would just like your nurse to take a look, you're welcome to come back free of charge.

What it feels like: most people find it very tolerable. Some people find it uncomfortable, and the skin around the eyes can be more sensitive than other areas.

Aftercare: keep the area clean, avoid make-up on treated skin for 24 hours (or as your nurse advises), and don't pick. Your nurse will explain everything before you leave. There's no downtime, so you can carry on with your usual day straight after.

Prices

You pay for a 30-minute session with a registered nurse, not per milium. Most people have several milia, so this usually works out better value than paying per spot.

Comparing prices?

Check three things:

  • Is the price per spot, or does it cap how many are treated?
  • Who treats you: a registered nurse, or a beauty therapist?
  • Do follow-up visits cost extra?

Frequently asked questions

How much does milia removal cost?

£150 for a 30-minute session, including a free consultation and a free top-up within 8 weeks if needed. You pay per session, not per milium.

Will the NHS or my GP remove milia?

Usually not. Milia are harmless, so removal is treated as cosmetic. Private treatment is the usual option if they bother you.

Can I squeeze milia out myself?

It's best not to. Milia sit under a thin layer of skin and have no opening, so squeezing rarely works and can leave the skin sore, marked or infected. It can be much safer and more effective to be treated by a professional.

Is it safe to treat milia near my eyes?

Yes. Under the eyes and on the eyelids are among the most common areas our nurses treat, and they take extra care there.

Will it leave a mark?

You may have slight redness or tiny marks for a few days. As with any skin treatment, there is a small risk of scarring that can't be ruled out. Your nurse will explain what you can expect at your consultation.

Will they come back?

Everyone is different, so we can't promise they won't come back. Treated milia can return, and new ones may form over time. Your nurse will talk you through what to expect.

How many appointments will I need?

Often one, depending on how many milia you have. If any need a touch-up, the follow-up within 8 weeks is free.

Do you treat milia in babies?

No. Milia are common in newborns and usually clear by themselves. We only treat people aged 18 and over, for all treatments.

When to see your GP first

If you have any concerns, we always encourage you to visit your GP or healthcare provider first, especially if a bump is:

  • growing, changing, bleeding or sore
  • a different colour, such as pearly, red or dark
  • one of many that appeared suddenly, or came with a rash
  • something you're not sure about

Our nurses won't treat anything that needs checking by a doctor.
